Neuroplasticity & Epigenetics – Day 24

Today we want to bring up two important concepts that will help you understand how you got here and also how you can recover more effectively and efficiently. Let the science commence!


First off is Neuroplasticity

Up until a few decades ago, people thought brains were stuck, fixed, unchangeable. Sayings like ‘You can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ were created. But we now know that is simply not true.

Your brain is actually plastic-like, it’s malleable, alterable, changeable. This is a great revelation because it means that the way we think and feel can be customized.

In your case, it’s wonderful because you can absolutely change your relationship with pornography if you are willing to put in the work.

You have been using porn to reward yourself with Dopamine. This has been happening for years and your brain/body are used to getting certain sensations after doing certain activities. Your body expects it now.

But with this knowledge, you now have the power to literally Re-Wire your brain and how you feel. You can find healthier ways to get a positive high like:

  • Working out
  • Giving to others
  • Eating really healthy foods

These are all positive ways to get a buzz. At first it won’t be as intense, but you will slowly take away power from the attraction to porn and you’ll experience the long-term positive effects from living a sustainable life.

Second – Epigenetics

I’m really not a scientist, so I’m going to give you a really glib and basic understanding of this concept. The reason I bring it up is this:

You are your genetics – the way you look, your height, eye color, your gender, etc. That’s you DNA. And although you have a fixed set of DNA, science is now discovering that your environment really impacts which parts of your DNA are activated or not.

For example, if you hang around bad people, there’s a lot more potential that negative aspects of your DNA will be activated. What’s important to understand is that the CHOICES YOU MAKE will impact the DNA of your children, and your grandchildren, etc etc.

That means the more you work on yourself, the better the chances for your children to have an easier time in the future for 2 reasons:

  1. Because you will be able to raise them in a better environment
  2. Because you will be working certain things out in your DNA now
